Two Police Officers Arrested For Theft Of State Property Worth Almost R1 Million

Both officers appeared in the Graaff-Reinet Magistrate’s Court on the day of their arrest and were released on R500 bail. The case has been adjourned to February 23 for further investigation.

Two police officers from the South African Police Services (SAPS) Stock Theft and Endangered Species unit in Graaff-Reinet have been charged with theft after being accused of stealing state property worth almost R1 million.

Warrant Officers Johannes Gerber and Lawrence Plaatjies were arrested on Thursday morning following a week-long investigation by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit.

The arrest came after the police obtained search warrants to search the residential properties of the accused officers. During the search, state property estimated to be valued over R1 million was recovered, including brand new sets of tires, a freezer, a fridge, and diesel generators.

Both officers appeared in the Graaff-Reinet Magistrate’s Court on the day of their arrest and were released on R500 bail. The case has been adjourned to February 23 for further investigation.

In response to the arrest, the provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, issued a stern warning to all members of the SAPS.

He emphasized that there is no place for corrupt officials within the ranks of the police force and that a zero-tolerance approach will be taken to clamp down on those who are in conflict with the law.
