The story of Gerhard Minnaar, a pilot from Mbombela, took a tragic turn as the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC) confirmed the discovery of his gyrocopter wreckage in Louis Trichardt, Limpopo.
Minnaar was last seen at Nelspruit Airport shortly after 8 a.m. on Tuesday. An extensive search and rescue operation soon followed his disappearance, highlighting the critical nature of the circumstances.
Rescue Efforts and Discovery of Wreckage
ARCC Chief of Operations, Gregory Critchley, stated that they were on high alert for the missing aircraft. “The ARCC promptly initiated the official search and rescue operation to locate the missing pilot, collaborating with the South African Police Service Airwing, SARZA (a volunteer search and rescue unit), and local pilots,” he noted.
Utilizing drones and a South African Police Service aircraft, the team ultimately located the wreckage, which matched the description of the missing gyrocopter. Tragically, the pilot was found to have sustained fatal injuries during the accident.
Investigation and Community Response
The investigation into the accident has now been handed over to police and relevant aviation authorities. Critchley expressed profound gratitude towards the various search and rescue teams for their swift response.
