Suspect Arrested For Murder Of Mpumalanga Police Captain

The arrest took place in the early hours of Wednesday, 20th March 2024, in Kabokweni, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Mpumalanga Provincial Tracking Team, Crime Intelligence (CI), and the Tactical Response Team (TRT).

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has commended the efforts of SAPS members in the arrest of a suspect believed to be responsible for the shooting and killing of Police Captain Sibusiso Bethwell Mthombothi.

The suspect, a 32-year-old male, was also accused of robbing Captain Mthombothi of his service firearm.

The arrest took place in the early hours of Wednesday, 20th March 2024, in Kabokweni, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Mpumalanga Provincial Tracking Team, Crime Intelligence (CI), and the Tactical Response Team (TRT).

After the fatal shooting incident, the suspect managed to flee the scene and went into hiding. However, the police were relentless in their pursuit and left no stone unturned in their search for the perpetrator.

Through the assistance of the public, who provided valuable information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts, an intelligence-driven operation was launched.

The information was followed up by the team, leading to the suspect’s discovery hiding inside a house in Sifunindlela, Kabokweni, outside Nelspruit. The suspect was successfully cornered and apprehended.

The arrested suspect is expected to appear at the Pienaar Periodical Court on Friday, 22nd March 2024, where he will face a murder charge. As the investigation progresses, additional charges may be added.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, expressed her satisfaction with the arrest and used the opportunity to encourage members of the public to continue working together with the police by providing valuable information.

Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela emphasized the significance of the partnership between the SAPS and the community.
