The City of Johannesburg has expressed its condemnation of a brazen shooting incident that occurred on Monday morning, resulting in the death of two individuals and the injury of three others, including Sithembiso Zungu, the city council’s chief whip.
The incident took place during a public event in the south of Johannesburg, where Zungu and other officials were attending to donate school shoes and other items to disadvantaged children in Zakariyya Park.
In a statement released by Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda, condolences were extended to the families of the deceased while wishing Zungu and the wounded victims a speedy recovery.
The mayor emphasised the need to address the lawlessness with which criminal elements terrorise residents and society. The tragic incident, occurring in broad daylight and in the presence of community members and children, is deeply concerning and calls for urgent action.
Rand Water, the bulk water utility, expressed devastation over the loss. The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and the SA Police Service are currently investigating the incident.
Police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi stated that an unknown number of suspects entered the hall, opened fire, and fled the scene in an unknown white vehicle. Two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while three others were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds.
At this stage, the motive behind the shooting remains unknown. The police have urged anyone with information to come forward and assist with the investigation by contacting the Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111 or anonymously reporting tip-offs on MySapsApp.
The social services department of Johannesburg will provide support to those who witnessed the incident.
