SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter commended the customs officers for their dedication and commitment to preventing the export and import of illegal substances.

Last week, customs officers from the South African Revenue Service (SARS) made a significant seizure of narcotics at OR Tambo International Airport.

Disguised as moulded artwork, the officers discovered 23kg of drugs with an estimated street value of R37m. The narcotics were destined for New Zealand, but thanks to the officers’ vigilance, they were intercepted during an inspection at the cargo sheds.

Upon inspecting a suspicious box, the officers used a narcotics test kit and found that some of the artwork items tested positive for crystal meth, weighing 10kg.

Further testing by the police revealed that other items contained fentanyl, weighing 13kg. The seized narcotics have been handed over to the police for further investigation.
