Crime-fighting units in KwaZulu-Natal have successfully intercepted a shipment of cocaine aboard a ship travelling from Colombia to South Africa. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks, led the operation.
Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, spokesperson for the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal, reported that a multi-disciplinary team comprising various law enforcement agencies and security personnel collaborated to seize the illicit drugs at the Richards Bay port of entry.
The operation involved the King Cetshwayo District Task Team, Richards Bay Organized Crime Unit, Local Criminal Record Centre, South African Revenue Services Customs, US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Transnet Port Terminal Security, and private security officers.
Acting on a tip-off about the vessel carrying drugs, officers planned and executed a search upon its arrival. The search revealed blocks of cocaine with an estimated street value of R15 million.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing. Major General Dr. Lesetja Senona, the Hawks Provincial Head, expressed his appreciation for the successful seizure of the drugs.
He commended the collaborative efforts of all involved, particularly the external stakeholders who played a crucial role in preventing the drugs from reaching the streets of the country. Major General Senona emphasized the commitment to work together with internal stakeholders to track down and apprehend the individuals responsible for this drug trafficking operation.
This interception serves as a significant blow to drug trafficking networks operating in the region. The seizure demonstrates the effectiveness of the coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies and their dedication to keeping communities safe from the harmful impact of illegal drugs.
