A 29-year-old mother is scheduled to appear in Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, August 24, after being arrested for the murder of her 10-month-old daughter and for attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

The woman was arrested on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, when the body of her child was discovered in a shallow grave.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in Limpopo, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the 29-year-old mother, a landlord at Giyani Section F, left her home to meet her lover on Saturday, 19 after tenants inquired about one of her children who had suddenly disappeared.

According to Ledwaba, the tenants became suspicious and saw a shallow grave on Monday, August 21.

“Community members gathered at the woman’s house in her absentia and police were notified. They immediately followed the leads and traced the woman,” he explained.

According to Ledwaba, the mother was then driven to her home, where she pointed to a shallow grave where she reportedly buried her disabled daughter.

“It is alleged that she indicated that her daughter died following a sickness, and she decided to bury her alone since she did not have a birth certificate. The child’s body was exhumed and the suspect was arrested,” Ledwaba added.

The mother of the murdered child, who was meant to protect the baby, is the major suspect, according to Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.

“A postmortem to determine what actually caused the death of the child is still to be conducted,” she said.
