The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Tactical Response Unit recently apprehended a 40-year-old man in the Etwatwa area for the possession of a hijacked Volkswagen Polo.
Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, spokesperson for the EMPD, provided details of the arrest.
According to Thepa, EMPD officers received information regarding a hijacked motor vehicle, which was traced to the Emaphupheni section of Etwatwa.
Acting on this information, the officers located the silver VW Polo hatchback at a residence on Reuben Street. The 40-year-old suspect was found in the process of stripping the vehicle.
Upon conducting a thorough inspection, it was determined that the vehicle had been hijacked on Mabaso Street in Daveyton the previous Saturday night.
The arrested individual, however, claims that he was not involved in the theft. He alleges that an unknown male had asked him to strip the vehicle.
The suspect has been arrested and is currently being held at the Etwatwa Police Station. Meanwhile, the hijacked vehicle has been transported to the Aeroton Police Yard for safekeeping.
The EMPD continues to investigate the case to determine the full extent of the suspect’s involvement and identify any potential accomplices. The department remains committed to combating vehicle theft and ensuring the safety and security of the community in Ekurhuleni.
