The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has confirmed it is investigating the alleged assault of a motorist by police officers.

The incident, which took place in Randburg on Friday evening, occurred following an argument between JMPD officers and an unidentified motorist.

According to JMPD, the altercation unfolded when the police officers attended to an accident scene involving the motorist. During their inspection, the officers discovered that the victim’s motor vehicle license disc had expired and wanted to impound the vehicle. However, the motorist refused, leading to a heated argument.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla stated in a press release, “The argument escalated, resulting in an altercation between the motorist and an officer, followed by the alleged assault by officers towards the motorist. The victim sustained injuries to the head and torso.”

This is not the first time that police officers in South Africa have found themselves embroiled in controversy. In July, a video went viral on social media showing Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s VIP protection officers brutally assaulting a motorist on the N1 highway. The incident sparked public outrage, and the eight officers involved face multiple charges, including assault and pointing a firearm.

In a separate incident last month, a member of the South African Police Services (SAPS) was arrested for violently assaulting seven men on the N11 highway in KwaZulu-Natal. The incident, also captured on mobile phone footage, was widely shared on social media. The police officer involved has been charged with assault and has been released on bail.
