A tragic incident has occurred in Pretoria, resulting in the death of a Grade 6 learner from Modiselle Primary School in Ga-Rankuwa.
The learner allegedly fell out of a moving scholar transport bus on Thursday afternoon, and unfortunately, the rear wheels ran over him, causing him to lose his life.
This incident adds to a series of unfortunate events involving learners in Gauteng. Just recently, Latoya Temilton drowned during an excursion, and in the Joburg South area, over 75 learners witnessed a Rand Water executive being shot dead during a donation drive. These incidents highlight the need for increased safety measures and vigilance in educational settings.
The Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane, expressed deep sadness over the incident. The provincial department of education has sent a psycho-social support team to the scene of the incident and the learner’s family to provide assistance during this difficult time.
In light of this tragic event, Chiloane has called on drivers who transport children across the province to exercise extreme caution.
