Eight Suspected Illegal Miners Arrested In Connection With Robberies On M1 Highway

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police's tactical response unit closed in on the suspects near Main Reef Road and Shamrock Street in Primrose, where the shootout occurred.

In an incident that occurred during peak hour traffic on Tuesday, eight suspected illegal miners were arrested in connection with a series of robberies targeting drivers on the M1 highway in Johannesburg.

The gun-wielding criminals, known as zama zamas, were apprehended after a shootout with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police in Germiston.

The incident took place at the Crown Interchange in the CBD, where distressed motorists were robbed at gunpoint. Panicked drivers stuck in traffic shared alarming messages, calling for emergency assistance. The City of Joburg was once again reminded of the dangers and impact of illegal mining as armed men went from car to car, robbing motorists of their belongings.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police’s tactical response unit closed in on the suspects near Main Reef Road and Shamrock Street in Primrose, where the shootout occurred. One male suspect was found lying on the ground with a gunshot wound and a rifle next to him. The officers further apprehended seven additional suspects.

The suspects now face charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, and illegal mining. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against illegal mining and its associated criminal activities.
