The state has withdrawn charges against three of the twelve accused in the Thabo Bester prison escape case. Thabo Bester, his girlfriend Nandipha Magudumana, and ten others appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, facing a range of charges including fraud, corruption, aiding and abetting a prisoner to escape, and tampering with a corpse.
The remaining accused in the prison escape case include Magudumana’s father Zolile Cornelius Sekeleni, former G4S employees Senohe Matsoara, Buti (Motenyane John) Masukela, Tieho Frans Makhotsa, Joel Maketha, Integriton CCTV technician, Teboho James Lipholo, and Zando Moyo.
It was revealed that a Zimbabwean national was also arrested for allegedly assisting Magudumana in claiming a body under false pretences.
However, during the court proceedings, state prosecutor Amanda Bester informed Acting Chief Magistrate Estelle de Lange that the state was withdrawing charges against G4S operator Nastassja Jansen, as well as G4S officials Thabang Meir and Moeketsi Ramolula. The reason behind the withdrawal of charges was not disclosed by Bester.
Bester further stated that the state was ready to hand over the indictment, which outlines the charges, to the remaining accused.
