The Gauteng education department has confirmed that Matthew Lani, who goes by the name “Dr Matthew Bongani Lani” on TikTok, does not possess a matric certificate despite claiming to be a qualified doctor. Lani, a 24-year-old influencer with almost 300,000 followers, was recently exposed for his fraudulent claims.
According to Gauteng education spokesperson Steve Mabona, Lani’s academic journey began at Bordeaux Primary School in Randburg in 2007. However, due to his academic performance, he was later transferred to Gresswold Learners with Special Educational Needs School in Kew, Johannesburg, in January 2010. His time at the special needs school ended in September 2012.
Although Lani reappeared in the education system in 2016 at Fourways Adult Centre as a part-time candidate, he only managed to pass one out of the three subjects he attempted. Based on the records and verified information from Umalusi, the education quality assurance council, it has been confirmed that Matthew Bongani Lani does not possess a matric certificate.
On TikTok, Lani had claimed to be an exceptional pupil who skipped grades 4, 6, and 8. However, he admitted to not having a matric certificate but instead alleged that he had obtained a higher diploma from Cambridge International College in England.

Cambridge International College, however, denied Lani’s claims. The institution stated that Lani was never enrolled at their college, and his name does not appear on their register. They vehemently denied any suggestion that Lani holds any qualification from their institution.
This revelation has sparked concerns about the authenticity of information shared on social media platforms. It serves as a reminder to the public to exercise caution and verify the credentials of individuals before accepting their claims.
