ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula collapsed during a media briefing on Thursday, shortly after the party secured a major legal victory that cleared the way for 181 excluded candidates to contest the upcoming local government elections.

Mbalula, who had earlier become emotional while reacting to the Constitutional Court ruling, was visibly sweating when he told journalists he was not feeling well before slumping. ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu assisted him as reporters were asked to switch off their cameras while the incident unfolded.

The incident came on a significant day for the ruling party, which had challenged the Electoral Commission of South Africa’s (IEC) decision to exclude 181 of its candidates from the November local government elections.

The Constitutional Court upheld the ANC’s appeal, paving the way for the candidates to be included on the ballot. While party members celebrated the outcome in court, the media briefing took an unexpected turn when Mbalula appeared to become unwell.

Following the ruling, Mbalula spoke about the difficult period the ANC had endured while fighting to have its candidates reinstated.

The secretary-general expressed gratitude to the party’s national officials for their patience throughout the legal battle, acknowledging the pressure involved in pursuing the matter. His emotional reaction reflected the significance of the judgment for the ANC as it prepares for the upcoming elections.

“I thank the national officials of the movement who carried this matter with patience. And patience was not easy,” Mbalula said while responding to the court’s decision.

However, the subsequent media briefing was interrupted when Mbalula said he was not feeling well before slumping in front of journalists. Bhengu stepped in to assist him, and reporters were instructed to turn off their cameras as the situation unfolded. Bhengu later took over the briefing and informed the media that Mbalula was receiving medical attention.

Mbalula’s collapse quickly shifted attention away from the party’s court victory, with the incident raising concerns about his well-being. He had appeared emotional following the judgment and was visibly sweating shortly before he slumped. Further details about his condition were not provided in the information available at the time of publication.

The Constitutional Court ruling, meanwhile, marks an important development in the ANC’s preparations for the November local government elections. The party had challenged the exclusion of 181 candidates, arguing for their reinstatement on the ballot. With the appeal upheld, those candidates can now be included in the electoral process, giving the ANC a significant outcome in its dispute with the IEC.
