Ford South Africa Retrenchments: NUMSA Condemns Layoffs Of 400+ Workers

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) is launching a scathing critique against Ford Motor Company’s South African operations following its decision to issue retrenchment notices to over 400 employees this week.

NUMSA has expressed profound outrage at the automaker’s move, accusing it of putting corporate balance sheets ahead of its workforce’s well-being.

The union confirmed its members received the legally mandated retrenchment notices, signaling the start of a formal consultation process. NUMSA’s spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, did not mince words, stating the company is “prioritising profits over the livelihoods of employees.”

Behind the Layoffs: Ford’s Manufacturing Realignment Plan

The job cuts are part of the company’s broader strategy to streamline its manufacturing footprint in South Africa. The company is restructuring operations at its two primary assembly plants located in Silverton, Pretoria, and Struandale in the Eastern Cape.

This realignment is proposed to increase overall efficiency but comes at the significant cost of local jobs. In the notice, the company stated it “proposes to realign its manufacturing operation and that this realignment may result in the discontinuation of approximately 474 jobs.”

NUMSA has characterized the planned layoffs and potential plant changes as a direct assault on workers and their families. The union is preparing to challenge the decision vehemently, promising to fight for every job.

Hlubi-Majola expressed the union’s position by saying, “NUMSA is shocked at the announcement made by Ford Company South Africa. We regard these plant closures and retrenchments as an attack on the South African working class.”
