As schools opened this week, Lynn Forbes, the mother of the late rapper AKA, couldn’t help but be reminded of her son.
Her granddaughter, Kairo, AKA’s daughter, started her first days of Grade three, and Lynn took to Instagram to share a photo of Kairo in her school uniform and dedicate a post to her late son.

AKA, whose real name was Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, tragically lost his life on February 10, 2023, when he was gunned down in Durban.
His family has been deeply affected by his death, and as his death anniversary and birthday approach, Lynn still feels his presence, especially during special moments.
In her heartfelt Instagram post, Lynn expressed how AKA was with her as she took Kairo to school, stayed with her throughout the day, and even sat with her during the parent info session.
Lynn shared that it broke her heart when they spoke about the upcoming dad-and-daughter robotics days, something AKA was excited about.
Kairo, now eight years old, continues to feel her father’s presence. Lynn mentioned how Kairo notices him in butterflies and clouds and how they recently reminisced about the homemade cake she made for AKA on his last birthday.

With AKA’s killer still at large, Minister Bheki Cele has expressed confidence in cracking the case. Two individuals who allegedly know how the rapper met his untimely demise are under police protection, and the getaway cars and the murder weapon have been recovered.
AKA may be gone, but his spirit lives on through his loved ones. Lynn and Kairo cherish the memories and feel his presence every day.
