Driver Abandons Truck Loaded With R8 Million Illicit Cigarettes At Botswana-South Africa Border

Members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and police officers have successfully confiscated illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of R8 million.

This significant seizure took place along South Africa’s border with Botswana, underscoring the continuous and joint efforts to address illicit economic activities.

Provincial police spokesperson in North West, Colonel Adele Myburgh, provided detailed insights into the operation.

According to reports, on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, police responded to a call by SANDF members who were patrolling near the Botswana/South Africa borderline, close to Makgobistad.

The SANDF personnel had spotted a suspicious truck that had apparently stopped due to a deflated tyre.

As they approached the vehicle to investigate further, a man exited the truck, jumped the fence into Botswana, and fled on foot.

Upon conducting a search of the truck, the SANDF and police officers discovered a significant quantity of illicit cigarettes, which were promptly confiscated.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks, has since launched an investigation into the matter to uncover further details and pursue any potential leads.

Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the provincial commissioner of police in North West, commended the team for their attentiveness, which led to the successful discovery and confiscation.
