ChatGPT Can Now Remember All Your Past Conversations

ChatGPT Can Now Remember All Your Past Conversations

OpenAI has announced a powerful new feature for ChatGPT: it can now remember everything you’ve said in past conversations. That means you no longer have to repeat your preferences or context each time you chat.

“We have greatly improved memory in ChatGPT — it can now reference all your past conversations!” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared in an X post on Thursday, spotted by The Verge.

“This is a surprisingly great feature imo, and it points at something we are excited about: AI systems that get to know you over your life, and become extremely useful and personalized.”

This change marks a significant evolution in how users interact with AI — shifting from one-off queries to long-term, intelligent companionship.

From Custom Instructions to Full Conversation Recall

The journey to this breakthrough began in 2023 when OpenAI introduced custom instructions — a way to tell ChatGPT your preferences, such as family size or preferred tone of response.

Early in 2024, users were given the ability to ask ChatGPT to remember specific facts, like your name or dietary restrictions.

Now, the AI can automatically retain both the details you explicitly tell it and the subtle insights it gathers through ongoing dialogue.

“The more you use ChatGPT, the more useful it becomes,” says OpenAI. “New conversations build upon what it already knows about you to make smoother, more tailored interactions over time.”

Who Gets Access and How to Manage Your Memory

This advanced memory feature is currently being rolled out to subscribers of ChatGPT’s $200/month Pro plan and the $20/month Plus plan.

Users on Team, Enterprise, and Edu tiers can expect access in the coming weeks. OpenAI hasn’t confirmed when — or if — the update will be available to free users.

Concerned about privacy? You’re still in control. If you don’t want ChatGPT to remember your chats, you can disable memory in the settings.

“If you’ve already opted out of memory, ChatGPT won’t reference past conversations by default,” OpenAI reassures. Alternatively, you can use the Temporary Chat option for one-off, memory-free conversations.
