National Consumer Commission Urges Immediate Return Of Dark And Lovely Products

According to the NCC’s Deputy Commissioner, Thezi Mabuza, the manufacturer L'Oreal detected the presence of bacteria in the 50ml single-use neutralising shampoo included in these kits during routine quality control checks.

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued an urgent call for consumers to stop using certain Dark and Lovely products immediately.

This advisory specifically targets the Lovely Moisture Plus Kits (Regular and Super) and the Dark and Lovely Anti-Breakage Kit. Consumers in possession of these products are advised to return them for a full refund.

According to the NCC’s Deputy Commissioner, Thezi Mabuza, the manufacturer L’Oreal detected the presence of bacteria in the 50ml single-use neutralising shampoo included in these kits during routine quality control checks.

Mabuza stated, “While this is a single-use shampoo, we urge South Africans who might still have these products in their possession to stop use and return to the point of purchase for a full refund.”

She further explained that using the contaminated shampoo could lead to scalp infections, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems.

The suspect shampoo was produced in April 2023 and distributed nationally, as well as exported to several neighbouring countries including Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Kenya, Ghana, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Morocco, and Nigeria.

Mabuza emphasized the importance of adhering to the Consumer Protection Act, which mandates that products must be of good quality and free of defects. “We urge suppliers and manufacturers to always prioritize consumer safety. The commission is monitoring the recall based on its recall guidelines,” Mabuza added.

Consumers are urged to take immediate action to ensure their safety by returning the affected Dark and Lovely products. The National Consumer Commission remains vigilant in monitoring this recall to ensure compliance and consumer protection.
