Former SAA Board Member Kwinana Arrested For Extortion And Property Demolition

Yakhe Kwinana, a former board member of South African Airways (SAA), has been arrested for a string of violent crimes allegedly committed in East London.

Kwinana, 60, is accused of extorting money from victims and instructing the demolition of their properties.

The charges also include malicious damage to property and the pointing of a firearm.

Kwinana, a chartered accountant, was arrested by a multi-disciplinary team, which included members from the national intervention unit, Gauteng serious and violent crime investigations, the tactical response team, and the national traffic anti-corruption unit.

She was apprehended in Midrand, Gauteng, after a lengthy investigation into her activities.

Allegations Of Taxi Violence And Armed Threats

According to police spokesperson Maj-Gen Nonkululeko Phokane, Kwinana was allegedly involved in a series of extortion schemes linked to taxi violence in East London.

Victims reported that she often had armed men accompany her during her threats, further fueling her reign of terror.

Kwinana is also believed to have played a direct role in instructing the demolition of properties belonging to her victims.

Court Appearance Scheduled

Kwinana made her first appearance at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

She faces multiple charges, and her case will continue in the East London Magistrate’s Court on March 24.

Law enforcement officials have assured that further investigations into Kwinana’s alleged criminal network will continue.
