Barberton Shooting: One Killed And Three Wounded As Gunmen Open Fire On Group

A Barberton shooting has left one man dead and three others injured after gunmen opened fire on a group walking home from a tavern in Emjindini, Mpumalanga. The incident happened at about 3.50am on Saturday, with the victims later taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Police were alerted to the incident after receiving a report from the hospital. Officers who arrived at the facility were shown the deceased man and three other victims who had sustained gunshot wounds.

Barberton Shooting Leaves One Dead And Three Injured

The Barberton shooting occurred after the four victims had reportedly left a tavern in Emjindini and were making their way home. Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said the circumstances surrounding the attack were still being investigated. One of the victims died from his injuries, while the remaining three were receiving medical treatment.

“Upon arrival, a medical practitioner pointed out a deceased man and three other victims who had sustained gunshot wounds.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that the four victims were shot while they were on their way from a tavern in Emjindini. One victim succumbed to his injuries while the other three are currently receiving medical treatment,” Masondo said.

Police have not yet established what led to the shooting. The identity of the attacker or attackers has also not been released.

Barberton Shooting: Police Launch Manhunt For Suspects

A murder case and three counts of attempted murder have been opened following the Barberton shooting. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect or suspects responsible for the attack as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Masondo said the motive remains unknown and the investigation is continuing. Anyone who may have information that could help police identify or locate the suspect or suspects is urged to come forward.

Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Vows Action After Barberton Shooting

Mpumalanga police commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise said officers would continue working to ensure those responsible for the Barberton shooting are arrested. She also appealed to residents to alert authorities about people who may be illegally possessing firearms.

“We therefore plead with members of the public to alert the authorities when they have information about those in possession of a firearm unlawfully, so that we can act before another life of an innocent person is taken.

“We will not allow criminals to terrorise our communities. Hence, we will act without any hesitation,” said Modise.

The investigation remains ongoing as police continue searching for the suspect or suspects.
