Waterfall Crash: Five Killed As Taxi Collides With Mercedes-Benz And Catches Fire

Five people were killed in a devastating crash involving a minibus taxi and a Mercedes-Benz sedan in Waterfall, Midrand, on Tuesday evening.

The minibus taxi reportedly collided with the sedan at the intersection of Pretoria Main Road and Maxwell Drive before overturning and catching fire. Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers and emergency services rushed to the scene as responders worked to assist those involved.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla confirmed that all five fatalities were occupants of the minibus taxi. The condition of those travelling in the Mercedes-Benz had not yet been confirmed.

Five Killed As Minibus Taxi Overturns And Burns

Emergency crews were confronted with a severe two-vehicle collision after the taxi and Mercedes-Benz collided at the Waterfall intersection.

The force of the impact caused the minibus taxi to overturn, after which it caught fire. Five people inside the taxi were confirmed dead at the scene.

“Regrettably, five fatalities have been confirmed on scene from the minibus taxi,” Fihla said.

Responders remained at the scene while authorities dealt with the aftermath of the collision and assessed the occupants of the Mercedes-Benz.

Pretoria Main Road Intersection Closed After Crash

The severity of the collision resulted in the closure of the intersection in all directions.

The closure caused major traffic delays across Midrand and Waterfall as the crash occurred during Tuesday evening’s peak traffic period. Motorists were affected while emergency personnel and law enforcement officers worked at the scene.

Authorities had not yet confirmed the identities of the five people who died. The condition of the Mercedes-Benz occupants also remained unclear at the time of reporting.

JMPD Investigates Cause Of Fatal Midrand Collision

The circumstances leading to the Waterfall crash remain under investigation by the JMPD.

Authorities are expected to establish how the two vehicles collided and what happened immediately before the minibus taxi overturned and caught fire. No further details about a possible cause had been confirmed.

The crash once again highlights the dangers faced by motorists and passengers on busy Gauteng roads, particularly during peak-hour traffic, although investigators will determine the circumstances of this particular collision.
