Two ATMs at Batho Plaza in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, were bombed in the early hours of Saturday by a heavily armed group of suspects, leaving a chaotic scene as community members scrambled for leftover cash. The brazen attack has prompted an active investigation by authorities.

Incident Of ATM Bombing

Police reports indicate that around 2 a.m., approximately 15 armed suspects arrived at the plaza in a Toyota Quantum minibus. The group, armed with rifles and pistols, forcibly opened the plaza’s gate and assaulted two security officers on duty. They then detonated explosives on two ATMs, causing significant destruction.

The suspects managed to retrieve an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene. Videos circulating on social media show local residents attempting to collect cash remnants from the damaged ATMs before fights broke out among them.

Authorities Respond

Law enforcement officials are actively investigating the incident. Police have appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects. A spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) emphasised the danger posed by such crimes and urged the community to avoid tampering with evidence at crime scenes.

The incident has left the Batho Plaza community shaken. Residents have expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of violent crimes, particularly ATM bombings, in their area. The police have assured the public that efforts are being intensified to address organised crime and bring the perpetrators to justice.
