On the night of October 11, 2024, police officers from the public order policing unit responded to urgent information regarding two robbery and extortion suspects active in the Canzibe area of Ngqeleni, Eastern Cape.
The momentous event occurred around 23:20 when the suspects were reportedly located outside a local tavern, where they engaged in criminal activities that have been a growing concern for local residents.

Shootout with Police
Upon noticing the police presence, the suspects opened fire, initiating a dangerous shootout. Law enforcement officials bravely retaliated, resulting in the fatal wounding of a 35-year-old suspect on the scene.
The second suspect, however, managed to evade capture amid the chaos. An investigation has confirmed the recovery of a 9mm Norinco pistol along with ammunition, further linking the suspects to criminal conduct.

Official Response and Community Cooperation
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene addressed the situation, emphasizing the police’s commitment to combat extortion and related criminal activities. “We will not tolerate those who target hardworking businesses,” she stated.
Lt Gen Mene urged community members to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting any extortion-related incidents using the dedicated hotline at 082 387 1561. The police’s goal remains the eradication of such menaces, ensuring a secure environment for all residents and businesses alike.
