Woman Sentenced To Life Imprisonment For Murdering Her Boyfriend

In a shocking case that unfolded in the Nongoma area of Kwazulu-Natal, a woman named Nonjabulo Nokukhanya Nkosi, aged 37, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her boyfriend, Dumisani Qwabe, aged 47. The incident took place in 2021 and recently reached its conclusion in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.

Nkosi, who was in a romantic relationship with Qwabe, initially attempted to hire a hitman to carry out the murder. However, her plan fell through, and she decided to take matters into her own hands. She procured a firearm and petrol to execute the killing herself.

On October 25, 2021, Nkosi met Xolani Skhumbuzo Mtambo at a marketplace, where he loaded the firearm for her and provided instructions on its usage. Subsequently, Qwabe received a call from Nkosi and left his house. Later that night, his burnt remains were discovered inside his motor vehicle, which was found engulfed in flames on the road between Nongoma and Pongola.

Following the murder, Nkosi did not report to work the next day due to the burns she sustained on her left cheek and left hand. Suspicion arose, and upon further investigation, it was revealed that Nkosi was using Qwabe’s bank card and banking app to make cash withdrawals and purchases.

Nkosi was subsequently arrested, and an analysis of her cellphone records led to the arrest of Mtambo three months later. The state presented evidence in court, including WhatsApp messages exchanged between the accused before and after the murder, as well as CCTV footage from an ATM where Nkosi used Qwabe’s bank card.

The Pietermaritzburg High Court sentenced Nkosi to life imprisonment for the murder of Qwabe. Additionally, she received a five-year sentence for theft. Mtambo, on the other hand, was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for his involvement in the murder.

The court took into consideration that Mtambo was a first-time offender and was not present at the scene when the offense was committed, which led to a deviation from the minimum sentence of life imprisonment.

A victim impact statement, submitted to the court, described Qwabe as a kind and supportive person who had a vested interest in the community. The family expressed their difficulty in coming to terms with his death, especially considering the gruesome manner in which he was killed.
