Tibz Was Never A Target In AKA Murder Case “Victim Of Circumstance”

On 27 February, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed a major breakthrough in the murder case of AKA and his friend, celebrity chef Tibz.

Seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the tragic incident that took place outside Wish restaurant in Durban in February 2023.

During a media briefing, Police Minister Bheki Cele and KwaZulu-Natal police Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi revealed that the arrests were made after a year-long undercover investigation. The police had kept the progress of their investigation under wraps due to the sensitive nature of the case.

The police revealed that one of the six suspects had trailed AKA from the airport upon his arrival. The suspects played different roles, including a coordinator, two shooters, two spotters, and an organiser of firearms and vehicles.

Contrary to initial speculation, the police confirmed that Tibz was never a target. The coordinator, who was described as “the master of everything,” had assembled the team and paid all the suspects.

Tibz was a victim of circumstance, as the plan was originally for a drive-by shooting. However, AKA’s delay in leaving the restaurant resulted in the shooters taking action at point-blank range just outside Wish.

The police emphasised that they have a strong case against the suspects and are confident in their evidence. Four suspects are already in custody, while the other two are awaiting repatriation from Eswatini.

All six suspects will appear before the court on Thursday, and further details regarding the court proceedings are yet to be shared by the police.
