Shifting Landscape Of Social Media: Instagram Tops The List Of Most Deleted Apps

The decline in Instagram's popularity can be attributed to various factors, including the influx of ads and influencers using the platform to promote brands.

With the ever-increasing number of social media users worldwide, it’s no surprise that some popular platforms are losing favour.

In a world where users engage with multiple platforms each month and spend hours scrolling through their feeds, the popularity of social media apps can quickly decline.

According to a report by TRG Datacentres, Instagram was the platform that users were most eager to delete in 2023. Over 1 million people worldwide searched for “how to delete (my) Instagram account” each month, amounting to over 12,500 searches per 100,000 people globally. This shift in user behaviour signals a demand for platforms that resonate more authentically and cater to evolving needs.

The researchers at TRG Datacentres conducted a survey on popular apps that fell out of favour this year. They analyzed the nine most popular social networks worldwide and measured how many times “how to delete (my) account” was searched per month on average.

Instagram topped the list with 1,020,000 people looking to delete their accounts in 2023. Snapchat followed with 128,500, Twitter with 12,300, Telegram with 71,700, Facebook with 49,000, TikTok with 24,900, YouTube with 12,500, WhatsApp with 4,950, and WeChat with 2,090.

The decline in Instagram’s popularity can be attributed to various factors, including the influx of ads and influencers using the platform to promote brands.

However, it’s important to note that Instagram still boasts over 2 billion users worldwide. The researchers warn that if a million people continue to seek ways to delete the app each month, it could spell trouble for the once-dominant platform.

In contrast, Snapchat, popular among Gen Z, saw around 130,000 people looking to delete it each month. Despite this, the platform still has around 750 million users worldwide.

As the social media landscape continues to evolve, platforms will need to adapt and cater to the changing needs and preferences of users. Authenticity and user-centric experiences will be crucial in retaining and attracting users in the future.

So, if you’re considering deleting your Instagram account, you’re not alone. The shift in user priorities highlights the dynamic nature of social media and the ever-changing preferences of its users.
