Fortnite Introduces Voice Reporting Feature To Combat In-Game Abuse

This tool empowers users to actively address toxic behaviour and holds individuals accountable for their actions. It also sends a strong message that bullying and harassment will not be tolerated within the Fortnite community.

Epic Games has taken a significant step in addressing toxic behaviour within its popular game, Fortnite. The company has introduced a new tool that allows players to submit audio clips as evidence when reporting instances of bullying and harassment.

This feature, known as voice reporting, aims to create a safer and more inclusive gaming environment for all players. For players under the age of 18, voice reporting is automatically enabled.

The tool continuously records voice chats in 5-minute segments, which can be submitted to moderators as evidence when reporting abusive behaviour. This proactive approach ensures that young players are protected and their concerns are taken seriously.

Players who are over 18 have more control over how voice reporting is applied. In the game’s main settings, they can choose to have it “Always On,” which applies to all channels, or “Off When Possible,” disabling it in Party Channels with friends if everyone’s preferences align.

This flexibility allows adult players to tailor their experience while still having the option to report any misconduct they encounter.

To address privacy concerns, Epic Games has clarified that audio clips will not be stored for an extended period. Instead, they will be stored locally on the user’s device unless submitted as evidence.

Each new recording replaces the previous one, meaning that only the immediate last five minutes of audio can be reported. Under normal circumstances, audio clips will be automatically deleted after 14 days or once appropriate action has been taken.

If the accused player appeals the decision within that time, the audio clip may be retained for an additional 14 days. However, Epic Games assures that it will comply with legal requirements and retain audio clips as necessary.

This move by Epic Games aligns with the efforts of other gaming companies, such as Activision, Microsoft, and Sony, who have also taken steps to combat harmful online behaviour.

Earlier this year, Xbox introduced a system allowing players to submit 60-second audio clips alongside reports of abuse in voice chats. By implementing voice reporting, Epic Games demonstrates its commitment to fostering a positive gaming experience for all Fortnite players.

This tool empowers users to actively address toxic behaviour and holds individuals accountable for their actions. It also sends a strong message that bullying and harassment will not be tolerated within the Fortnite community.

As the gaming industry continues to evolve, it is crucial for companies to prioritize player safety and well-being.

Tools like voice reporting not only enable players to take action against abuse but also serve as a deterrent for potential offenders. By working together, players and game developers can create a more inclusive and respectful gaming environment.
