DStv Launches New Channel, Play Room, Offering Local SA Education And Entertainment Programs

DStv has been known for regularly adding new channels to its catalogue. However, in 2023, the broadcaster seems to have slowed down the addition of new channels significantly. By November 2022, DStv had already added six new channels.

DStv, a popular pay-TV broadcaster, has recently launched a new channel called Play Room on channel 300. This new channel aims to provide a wide range of local South African education and entertainment programming, as well as popular international content.

Play Room officially went live on 6 November 2023, offering a whole new world of learning and fun for local kids.

The executive head of general entertainment at the MultiChoice Group, Georginah Machiridza, expressed her belief that parents and children will have a strong affinity for the new channel.

She stated, “We are constantly looking to give our customers the best entertainment, and by increasing our content offering, we’re providing more viewing options to them. From a local content perspective, we’re excited to expand on local representation in the form of content being dubbed in local languages.”

Play Room has a carefully curated programming schedule that caters to different age groups. In the mornings, the channel focuses on broadcasting educational programming aimed at four- to six-year-olds.

This content aims to provide a fun and engaging learning experience for young children. In contrast, the afternoon programming features live-action shows and a local live show with high entertainment value for tweens. The local live show combines TV with social media to create an interactive experience for teenagers.

To access the Play Room channel, South Africans must subscribe to at least DStv Access, which costs R99 per month for the streaming-only plan or R129 monthly for the decoder package. This ensures that families have access to the channel and can enjoy the educational and entertaining content it offers.

DStv has been known for regularly adding new channels to its catalogue. However, in 2023, the broadcaster seems to have slowed down the addition of new channels significantly. By November 2022, DStv had already added six new channels.

However, Play Room is the first new channel offering in 2023. This demonstrates DStv’s commitment to providing quality content and expanding its offerings to cater to the diverse interests of its viewers.

It is worth noting that DStv dropped the CCTV-4 channel in March 2024. When asked about the decision to slow down new channel acquisitions in 2023, MultiChoice declined to answer and stated that they would communicate channel changes as they happen.

This suggests that there may be more exciting channel launches in the future, and viewers can look forward to further updates.
