The Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, has expressed deep concern after a teacher at Thoko Thaba Secondary School in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni, was allegedly found in possession of drugs on the school premises.

According to reports, the educator was allegedly found last week with a bag and box of drugs inside the school premises. The police were called in, and the teacher was subsequently arrested.

He appeared in court on Thursday, February 15th. MEC Chiloane has expressed disappointment that the school management team did not report the matter to the department in a timely manner, which has led to a planned community protest on Wednesday, February 21st.

In response to the incident, the provincial Department of Education has launched an investigation, and the teacher has been removed from the school as a precautionary measure. MEC Chiloane has appealed to the community to allow the department and the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

“We are deeply disappointed about this incident and vehemently condemn such conduct. We will take appropriate action against it,” said MEC Chiloane. “We also plead with the community to allow this matter to be handled by the Department and relevant law enforcement authorities for appropriate resolution.”

The discovery of drugs in a school environment is a serious concern for the Department of Education. Schools are meant to be safe spaces for learning and personal development. Incidents like these not only compromise the safety of students but also undermine the integrity of the education system.
