Steenhuisen: “VBS Saga Far Worse Than Phala Phala”

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen has made a strong statement regarding the VBS Mutual Bank looting saga, describing it as far more severe than the Phala Phala farm scandal.

The VBS Mutual Bank scandal, involving large-scale corruption and theft, led to the bank’s closure and has significant implications for the South African financial and political landscape.

Steenhuisen also highlighted that the DA would not support any motions related to the Phala Phala farm scandal brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) against President Cyril Ramaphosa.

This stance was reiterated by the Agriculture Minister, emphasizing the DA’s commitment to focusing on more substantial matters. According to Steenhuisen, the Phala Phala scandal is insignificant compared to the VBS Mutual Bank looting.

In response, the EFF’s Busisiwe Mkhwebane argued that it is the members of the Government of National Unity (GNU) who should be held accountable for the VBS Mutual Bank grand theft.

Mkhwebane asserted that those involved in the GNU should be charged and dealt with accordingly, rather than focusing on the EFF members.

During a media briefing on Wednesday, Steenhuisen outlined the DA’s expectations for President Ramaphosa’s opening of parliament address.

He affirmed that the DA expects the GNU to complete its five-year term and stated that they would not entertain any motion to impeach the president over the Phala Phala scandal.

Steenhuisen emphasized the importance of addressing more pressing issues such as the VBS Mutual Bank scandal, which he believes showcases blatant corruption and state capture.
