After losing to SuperSport United in Rustenburg, a group of enraged Kaizer Chiefs fans attacked the team, injuring coach Arthur Zwane.
After missing out on the Nedbank Cup for the eighth season in a row, Chiefs were looking for a season saver in the form of a continental qualifying spot.
But those aspirations were dashed on Saturday when they were defeated 1-0 by SuperSport in the penultimate round of the league season, ensuring that they would only end the season with 47 points if they won their last game.
With a game in hand, Chiefs are four points behind second-placed SuperSport and Orlando Pirates, who are both guaranteed a top-three finish this season.
A group of Chiefs fans reacted angrily to the confirmation of another fruitless season by the loss to SuperSport in Rustenburg, throwing objects at the squad as they walked to the dressing room’s tunnel.
According to mtnfc.co.za, Zwane was hit by a bottle, which injured him beneath his eye, causing him to skip his post-match press conference because he required medical attention.
His assistant coach, Dillon Sheppard, addressed the assembled media to reflect on the game that guaranteed their season’s fate.
It wasn’t the first time that Zwane needed a police escort from the pitch to the dressing room owing to overzealous supporters threatening to harm him.
Zwane had to be hauled away by heavy security after losing to Golden Arrows at home last month, putting their chances of finishing in the top two in jeopardy.
