South African soccer star Thamsanqa Gabuza recently made headlines when he appeared in court on charges of attempted sexual abuse, domestic violence, and malicious damage to property.

Gabuza’s legal team argued that he could not afford the bail amount of R5000 and instead proposed a reduced bail of R2000, which was all he had readily available.

While the case continues to unfold, many South Africans expressed their disappointment and raised questions about the financial choices of professional soccer players. One Twitter user, @phalanndwa6, humorously remarked, “Even if that’s the case, you don’t play rich in court. Poor, broke, poorest, support, children That’s what the court should know.”

Another Twitter user, @phile_h, questioned the accuracy of the narrative, stating, “But he is wearing an SSU kit here in your picture. Are you sure your narrative is supported by your image? It seems like misinformation to me.” It is important to note that the image used in the article may not necessarily reflect the specific court appearance mentioned.

Meanwhile, @lurh_sithole expressed disbelief, saying, “No man, not Gabuza.” This sentiment was shared by many, who found it hard to believe that a professional soccer player would face financial difficulties.

However, it is crucial to remember that athletes, including footballers, are not immune to financial challenges. @PrivateJay01 humorously commented, “You can’t have a wife and a side chick then have savings as a footballer.”

This lighthearted remark sheds light on the fact that managing finances can be a complex task for anyone, regardless of their profession.

Furthermore, @lebogang_tema pointed out, “Look at your football players; rugby men are the uphill.” This observation highlights the perception that rugby players are often seen as more financially stable compared to their soccer counterparts.

It is worth noting that financial stability can vary greatly among individuals within any given profession.

Lastly, @BlaqSabali mentioned, “Sometimes lawyers know how to play around with this kind of situation. It would work in the favor of a football player given the stereotype of how broke they turn out to be after a soccer career.” This comment alludes to the stereotypes surrounding the financial situations of retired soccer players and how legal strategies can be employed to navigate such circumstances.

As the case progresses, Thamsanqa Gabuza will return to court on December 11 for further investigation into the three gender-based violence charges he is facing.
