The president of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, has criticised the president of the South African Football Association (Safa), Danny Jordaan, for avoiding the question about how much the Bafana Bafana players would receive for their third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast.
After their victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in the third-place play-off, the Bafana Bafana team arrived back in South Africa to a warm welcome from a massive crowd.

During a press conference held after the team’s arrival, Jordaan was asked about the prize money, but he could not provide a definite answer. He stated that they would have to wait for the Confederation of African Football (Caf) to inform them and that the players themselves would decide whether or not to disclose the amount.
Malema criticised Jordaan for not being transparent and called for his resignation, emphasising the need for changes in Safa’s leadership.

Malema contrasted Jordaan’s response with that of Caf president Patrice Motsepe, who openly announces the distribution of prize money. He highlighted the importance of public disclosure to ensure transparency and prevent any potential discrepancies or misappropriation of funds.
While Malema acknowledged the need to celebrate Bafana Bafana’s achievements, he emphasised the significance of addressing the politics of football and ensuring that players receive their deserved rewards. He called for a sense of occasion and urged Safa to be more accountable and open about sensitive money matters.
