Mamelodi Sundowns have officially announced the departure of Lesedi Kapinga after the club decided not to exercise their one-year contract extension option for the midfielder.

Kapinga, a 28-year-old talent hailing from Limpopo, joined the Brazilians in 2020 on a three-year deal, with the possibility of extending for two more seasons.

However, his time at the Chloorkop-based side has been challenging, with limited playing time and mostly featuring as a substitute.

In a statement released to SurgeZirc SA by Kapinga’s agent, Mushe Mudau, it has been confirmed that the club had chosen not to exercise their option, consequently making the player a free agent.

“I can confirm that Mamelodi Sundowns have decided not to extend Kapinga’s contract, which means he will be leaving the club,” Mudau stated.

He further explained, “The club had until June 30th to communicate their intention to extend the contract, but they did not reach out to me or the player. As a result, Kapinga will be departing.”

Mudau expressed gratitude to Sundowns for the opportunities provided to his client and acknowledged the club’s care during Kapinga’s tenure. He also emphasized that there are no hard feelings as they part ways.

During the January transfer window, the former Black Leopards midfield maestro had attempted to secure a move elsewhere. However, time constraints prevented a transfer, and he remained with the club for the final six months of his contract.

Reports suggested that Sundowns had considered involving Kapinga in potential swap deals with other teams in the DStv Premiership, with SuperSport United and Cape Town City being mentioned as possible destinations.

Nevertheless, Kapinga now departs as a free agent after making 39 appearances for the club over his three-year spell. During his time at Sundowns, he contributed to the team’s success, winning three league titles and the Nedbank Cup.
