Captain Refiloe Jane is unwavering in her belief that Banyana Banyana can secure a spot in the Women’s World Cup last 16 for the first time, despite their initial setback in the tournament.
In their World Cup opener in New Zealand, the South African team put on a valiant display but unfortunately fell short, losing 2-1 to Sweden in Wellington on Sunday.

While the result was disheartening, Banyana’s performance brought solace to the team and entertainment to the fervent crowd. Unmoved, Banyana remains steadfast in their hope that they can progress to the knockout stage.
To achieve this, they must finish in the top two of Group G by securing at least four points against Argentina and Italy while hoping that their opponents cancel each other out.
As of now, they stand third in their group, with Sweden and Italy holding the top two positions, respectively, following Italy’s 1-0 victory against Argentina yesterday.
After taking a day off for rest and recuperation, Banyana will resume training tomorrow, focusing on their upcoming clash against Argentina in Dunedin on Friday.
Jane is certain that her teammates will leave no stone unturned in their preparations for this crucial match, understanding that victory is imperative to avoid elimination from the tournament at the group stage once again.
“We need to reflect on the game against Sweden, analyze our strengths and weaknesses, and then shift our focus to the next challenge,” Jane emphasized.
“Our approach is one game at a time – we prepared for Sweden, and now we are gearing up for Argentina, and so forth. We must remember that it’s not over yet – there are still two more games to go. All is not lost!”
Indeed, Jane’s optimism is well-founded. Banyana Banyana has repeatedly demonstrated their ability to overcome adversity and achieve the desired results.
“I won’t deny that the result is disappointing, but we can’t afford to throw in the towel,” added the Banyana midfielder. “Other teams will face each other too, so we will concentrate on our preparations, take each game as it comes, and see where we stand at the end of the tournament.”
The FIFA World Cup is the pinnacle of football, and there is no room for error. While individual errors looked lost against Sweden, Jane exhorted her team regardless.

“We anticipated that it would be a tough match – they played as we expected. Overall, I think we put on a commendable performance. They capitalized on our mistakes, but we hold our heads high,” Jane commented after Sunday’s match.
The weather in Wellington has been chilly and accompanied by rain since the tournament’s commencement, making the pitch slippery. Despite external challenges, the teams must step onto the field and give their best effort.
