South Africa Braces For New Economic Challenges – Lesetja Kganyago

South Africa is on the brink of navigating new economic challenges, according to Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago. Speaking at the 104th annual Ordinary General Meeting in Pretoria, Kganyago highlighted the complex road ahead for the country’s economy.
Despite some improvements in recent months, the path to recovery is fraught with risks and vulnerabilities that have persisted since the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of the major concerns outlined by Kganyago is the persistently high inflation rate. He pointed out that inflation remains a significant policy concern for central banks around the world, including in South Africa.

This has been exacerbated by the unprecedented levels of public debt globally.
Kganyago emphasized that there is limited fiscal or monetary policy space to manage emerging risks to financial stability. The potential for renewed inflation pressures and the challenges posed by climate change further complicate the outlook.
The vulnerabilities accumulated during the COVID-19 pandemic continue to pose significant risks.
Kganyago noted that despite better prospects in recent months, the economic recovery is still at risk. The pandemic has left a legacy of vulnerabilities that need to be addressed to ensure a stable recovery.
Furthermore, Kganyago mentioned that the financial stability of the country could be undermined by external shocks and domestic policy constraints. The lack of policy space limits the government’s ability to respond effectively to new economic challenges.
