Reception Manager Delivers Baby For Mother Trapped In Hospital Lift

A reception manager at Melomed Tokai Hospital in Cape Town became an unlikely hero after assisting a mother who unexpectedly gave birth while trapped in a hospital lift.

Shahnaz Carolus, who has served in the healthcare field for over 23 years, found herself in a life-saving situation when she responded to a distress call on the 14th of November.

Reception Crisis Unfolds

The incident began when the reception manager heard a commotion outside her office and discovered a visibly distressed couple. The husband urgently informed her that his wife, who was in advanced labour, needed immediate assistance.

Acting quickly, Carolus helped the couple into the lift, intending to take them to the maternity ward. However, moments after entering the lift, the expectant mother’s water broke, and the situation rapidly escalated.

Carolus, though not formally trained in childbirth, remained calm under pressure as the mother’s contractions grew more intense. As the baby’s head began to crown, it became evident that there was not enough time to reach the maternity ward.

Carolus, drawing on her instincts and experience, calmly guided the mother through the delivery process in the confined space of the stuck lift.

“The contractions were getting stronger, and I knew we didn’t have much time,” Carolus explained. “When her water broke, I realised the baby wasn’t going to wait for us to reach the ward.”

Birth in the Lift

In a further twist, the lift suddenly malfunctioned and became stuck, intensifying the crisis. Carolus quickly reassured the couple, advising the father to help his wife into a semi-reclined position while encouraging the mother to remain calm and continue breathing.

Despite the escalating urgency, Carolus maintained a composed and steady presence throughout the ordeal.

The birth itself was a dramatic moment. As the baby emerged, there was an unnerving silence. Carolus, fearing the worst, immediately began blowing gently into the baby’s face in a desperate attempt to stimulate a response. Her efforts were met with relief when the baby let out its first cry, signalling the successful delivery.

Shortly thereafter, a medical team arrived at the scene, offering assistance to both mother and child. The hospital has since praised Carolus for her quick thinking and dedication during the crisis.

Hospital’s Gratitude

In a statement, Melomed Hospital expressed their deep gratitude to Carolus, acknowledging that her actions prevented what could have been a life-threatening situation. The hospital’s management also described Carolus’ intervention as evidence of the extraordinary commitment of healthcare staff, particularly in moments of vulnerability.

“We are extremely grateful to Shahnaz for her quick response, which ensured the safety of both the mother and the baby. This incident highlights the incredible role healthcare workers play in supporting patients during the most challenging moments,” a hospital spokesperson stated.

Carolus, however, remains humble about the role she played in the event. “I was in the right place at the right time,” she said. “I don’t have formal childbirth training, but I trusted my instincts and stayed calm. I believe God guided me through that moment.” Carolus expressed gratitude for being part of such a unique and life-affirming experience.
