Ramaphosa Counters Shivambu’s Criticism With Grounded Realities

President Cyril Ramaphosa recently responded to Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Deputy President Floyd Shivambu’s criticisms during a debate at Cape Town City Hall.

Shivambu accused Ramaphosa of recycling old promises and suggested that the president’s narratives were fictional, even proposing a nomination for a South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for best fiction.

In a rebuttal on Monday, Ramaphosa stated that it was Shivambu who was out of touch with reality. He invited Shivambu to visit any of the 23,000 schools across the country where over a million school assistants have had a tangible impact on education.

Ramaphosa highlighted the role of mass public employment programs in creating economic and social value, citing the distribution of 188,000 agricultural input vouchers to small-scale farmers as a key example.

Ramaphosa also addressed the divisive rhetoric that emerged during the debate, condemning race-baiting and ethnic chauvinism as counterproductive to the goal of building a unified nation.

He emphasized the need for frank discussions about racial issues and urged for policies that resolve the economic and social contradictions facing South Africa.

Some Members of Parliament (MPs) criticized the inclusion of ‘white parties’ in the government, arguing that it marginalized black South Africans from meaningful economic participation.

In response to Shivambu’s harsh words, Ramaphosa defended his administration’s efforts and condemned divisive language.

The debate underscores the ongoing challenges and complexities in South African politics, where economic and social issues remain deeply intertwined with questions of race and representation.
