Former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede has complained that the courts are treating her unfairly as her trial continues.

The former mayor and 21 others are accused of fraud, money laundering, and racketeering in connection with an R320 million Durban solid waste tender.

Gumede claimed that the continuing court proceedings were costing her a lot of money.

On Monday, the State presented evidence from the first State witness, a former eThekwini municipal official who could not be identified in order to safeguard his identity.

The proceedings, however, began later than normal.

This was not surprising given crucial witnesses’ safety concerns following an alleged attack on one of them.

However, the former mayor of eThekwini stated that this was just another delay tactic in the case.

She also expressed concern that spending too much time in court was costing her money.

The State plans to continue leading evidence from the witness who took the stand on Tuesday.
