Struggle veteran Trevor Manuel, a former finance minister and prominent member of the African National Congress (ANC), has spoken out against former President Jacob Zuma, calling him a “totally abusive” individual.
Manuel made these remarks during an interview with Eyewitness News at an interfaith service for Palestine held at St. George’s Cathedral in Cape Town on Sunday night.

Manuel, who confirmed in 2022 that he is no longer a part of the ANC, expressed his concern about Zuma’s refusal to leave the party while using the hallowed symbols of the ANC’s military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, against it.
According to Manuel, the hijacking of these symbols by Zuma is a clear example of abuse.
The former finance minister highlighted various issues that he believes support his characterization of Zuma as abusive.
These include the charges of rape that Zuma faced, as well as allegations of corruption and the dismantling of government systems. Manuel emphasized that all of these actions speak to an individual who is completely abusive.

Manuel expressed his hope that people could see through Zuma’s actions and understand the damage he has caused.
He also mentioned that the ANC and the MK party are currently awaiting a court judgment regarding the use of the ANC’s name and symbols, which have been associated with the liberation movement since the 1960s.
