Recent developments in the City of Johannesburg have led to the expulsion of former Council Speaker, Makhubele, from the Congress of the People (COPE) party.
Makhubele’s expulsion came after she joined and was elected leader of the newly formed South African Rainbow Alliance (SARA) without the party’s permission. This decision was swiftly followed by a High Court ruling that nullified the appointment of City Manager Floyd Brink.
In a media briefing last week, Makhubele expressed her acceptance of the expulsion and highlighted her belief in her leadership capabilities.
She stated, “They fired me because I dared to believe that I can lead, and I can lead SARA and the nation of South Africa… Frankly, they fired me because they could, and they had the power to. These are men, and it’s a culture within our nation.”
Makhubele also took the opportunity to express her gratitude to the City of Johannesburg for allowing her to serve, promising continued dedication to the people even as SARA strengthens its presence beyond 2024.
As the ANC coalition arrangement in the city looks for a replacement, reports indicate that smaller parties within the coalition are considering Margaret Arnolds of the African Independent Congress (AIC) as a potential candidate to fill the vacant position left by Makhubele.
Arnolds, a member of the AIC, has been recognized for her contributions to the political landscape. Her name has been put forward by the smaller parties in the ANC coalition to take up the role of Council Speaker.

Replacing Makhubele with Arnolds would not only bring a fresh perspective but also provide an opportunity for the AIC to have a voice in the City of Johannesburg’s governance. Arnolds’ potential appointment reflects the ANC coalition’s commitment to inclusivity and collaboration with its smaller party partners.
With the ANC coalition’s support, Arnolds would bring her experience and expertise to the position of Council Speaker. Her appointment would signify a step towards achieving a more diverse and representative leadership within the city.
