Former National Assembly Speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, arrived at the Lyttelton Police Station in Centurion on Thursday morning to hand herself over to authorities.

The move comes after Mapisa-Nqakula bowed to pressure and resigned as Speaker and Member of Parliament on Wednesday. She is facing corruption allegations related to her tenure as Defence Minister.

In a statement issued by her political adviser, Mike Ramagoma, Mapisa-Nqakula maintained her innocence and expressed her determination to restore her good reputation. The allegations against her involve accepting bribes from a contractor. However, she vehemently denies these accusations.

Earlier this week, Mapisa-Nqakula’s urgent application to interdict law enforcement authorities from arresting her was struck off the court roll.

Last month, the Investigating Directorate conducted a search and seizure operation at Mapisa-Nqakula’s home in Bruma, Johannesburg. The investigation is linked to allegations of corruption during her tenure as Minister of Defence and Military Veterans.

According to SurgeZirc SA, the investigation revealed that she allegedly received R2.3 million in cash delivered in gift bags by defence businesswoman Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu, who is married to a general in the military health service.

Mapisa-Nqakula’s case continues to unfold, and it remains to be seen how the legal proceedings will progress. As she faces these serious allegations, the former National Assembly Speaker will have to navigate the legal system to prove her innocence and restore her reputation.
