A significant development has occurred in the ongoing fraud and corruption case involving former Free State premier Ace Magashule.
Moroadi Cholota, Magashule’s former personal assistant, has been apprehended in the United States, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). Cholota’s arrest is expected to shed light on Magashule’s alleged involvement in the notorious R255 million asbestos removal campaign.
The case centres around a massive government contract awarded by the Free State Department of Human Settlements.
The contract, valued at R255 million, aimed to identify and eradicate asbestos roofing from low-cost houses across the province. However, allegations of corruption, kickbacks, and minimal actual work on the project have plagued the investigation.
Moroadi Cholota, who served as Magashule’s personal assistant, is a crucial witness in this high-profile trial. Her testimony is anticipated to provide critical insights into Magashule’s actions and connections during the asbestos removal campaign.
NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane confirmed Cholota’s arrest, stating that she will make her initial court appearance in the United States.
Meanwhile, Magashule and his co-accused, including businessman Edwin Sodi, returned to the Bloemfontein High Court on Monday. The trial, originally scheduled to begin, has been postponed to June 14 due to various circumstances.
Magashule and his co-accused face a staggering 70 counts, including fraud, corruption, and money laundering. Among them are former Mangaung Mayor Olly Mlamleli and other prominent figures linked to the failed asbestos project. The trial promises to be a pivotal moment in South Africa’s fight against corruption.
