Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has once again made headlines by pledging to build low-cost government housing in the predominantly Afrikaans town of Orania in the Northern Cape.
This announcement comes as part of the EFF’s broader strategy to reclaim what they refer to as their land and to provide affordable housing solutions for South Africans.
In the recent elections held in May, the EFF secured a single vote in Orania, a town known for its Afrikaans-only policies. This is a significant drop from the 21 votes, or 3% of the total share, garnered at the Orania Volkskool voting station during the 2019 national elections.

Despite the low support in Orania, Malema remains unperturbed, reiterating his party’s intention to build RDP houses in the area once they take over the Northern Cape and South Africa.
Speaking at a birthday celebration rally in Kimberley, Northern Cape, Malema emphasized that Orania belongs to the people of South Africa and that the Northern Cape will be returned to the hands of Africans.
He stated, “When we take over the Northern Cape and South Africa, we will build RDP houses in Orania and send our people to go stay there.”
This aligns with his previously stated conditions for joining the government of national unity (GNU), which include the exclusion of the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Front Plus (FF+).
Malema did not shy away from criticizing the current government. He predicted the collapse of the GNU, accusing the African National Congress (ANC) of selling out the people of South Africa. “We said when we were formed 11 years ago that the ANC would die a natural death. That death we are witnessing today,” Malema proclaimed.
He also urged his supporters to fight against the GNU, labelling it as the enemy of the people and calling for a government that truly represents the interests of South Africans.
Julius Malema’s renewed pledge to build low-cost housing in Orania is a clear indication of the EFF’s commitment to addressing housing issues in South Africa.
However, his statements also highlight the deep political divisions and ongoing struggles within the country. As the EFF continues to challenge the status quo, the political landscape in South Africa remains as dynamic and unpredictable as ever.
