Floyd Shivambu Reflects On His ‘Gangsterism Relationship’ With Julius Malema

He elaborated, stating that, “if one person is wrong, you can’t call each other to order. You defend each other even if one is doing wrong things.”

Floyd Shivambu, the national organiser of the MK Party, has recently unlocked the intricacies surrounding his relationship with Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

In an interview with Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh, Shivambu candidly discussed the dynamics that once characterized their association.

From Brotherhood to Gangsterism Relationships

Reflecting on their years together, Shivambu described their relationship as one primarily rooted in politics. Despite occasional personal interactions, such as family gatherings and mutual support, he emphasized that what they shared resembled a brotherhood that often bordered on ‘gangsterism relationships.’

He elaborated, stating that, “if one person is wrong, you can’t call each other to order. You defend each other even if one is doing wrong things.”

This statement has raised eyebrows, as it reveals the complexities inherent in their partnership.

Shivambu’s Bold Transition Towards the MK Party

Shivambu’s departure from the EFF took many, including Malema, by surprise. He noted that while several leaders were aware of his intentions to join the MK Party, Malema himself was not informed.

“Some of those leaders pretended to cry during the meeting pretending they did not know my resignation,” he recounted.

Shivambu clarified that his decision was not driven by personal feelings but was a deliberate and bold political move.

His confidence in the MK Party draws lines of a vision for functionality and direction that, according to him, is urgently needed in the political discourse of South Africa.

As he looks ahead, Shivambu remains assured that his foundational role in the creation of the EFF—from the name to the seven cardinal pillars—will not overshadow his activism with the MK Party. His comments illuminate the often tumultuous world of political relationships and the personal sacrifices that accompany them.
