The Democratic Alliance (DA) has stated that it will not work with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to retain Gauteng municipalities due to ideological differences with the red berets.

Solly Msimanga, the DA’s Gauteng leader, said that previous arrangements with the EFF in the province had been disastrous. The party explained that it would rather work with other coalition partners to maintain its hold on the province’s metropolises, including Johannesburg.

On Tuesday, the Johannesburg High Court ruled that Mayor Mpho Phalatse’s removal late last month was unconstitutional.

The main challenge, however, is in the council, where some of the party’s coalition partners, such as the Patriotic Alliance, appear to have broken ranks and are now siding with the African National Congress (ANC).

Phalatse has proposed collaborating with the EFF, but her boss, Msimanga, has said that they should rather sit on the opposition benches than work with the red berets.

“We previously partnered with the EFF. It made things very unstable in a sense that if they wanted to have land invasion taking place in Lenasia and the surrounding areas, Herman Mashaba, who was the mayor, turned a blind eye to that and then it cost us to lose wards in Lenasia, as an example.”

Meanwhile, the ANC has stated that it is confident that it will reclaim Joburg in the coming weeks.

Sasabona Manganye, the party’s regional secretary, told Eyewitness News that they now had enough votes in council to topple the DA-led coalition.
