Cyril Ramaphosa Nominates Judge Mandisa Maya As Next Chief Justice

On Tuesday, the Presidency officially announced Ramaphosa's nomination of Maya to succeed Zondo as Chief Justice.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has put forward the nomination of Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya to assume the role of Chief Justice. Chief Justice Raymond Zondo’s 12-year tenure at the Constitutional Court is set to conclude in August.

In light of this, Ramaphosa has reached out to political party leaders in Parliament, urging them to provide their input on the nomination of Judge Maya.

Judge Maya was appointed as Deputy Chief Justice in September of last year, following her successful interview with the Judicial Service Commission. Prior to that, she held the position of president at the Supreme Court of Appeal.

On Tuesday, the Presidency officially announced Ramaphosa’s nomination of Maya to succeed Zondo as Chief Justice.

According to a statement from the Presidency, the position of Chief Justice will become vacant on August 31, 2024, when Justice Raymond Zondo’s term comes to an end. Zondo was initially appointed as a Constitutional Court justice for a 12-year term, starting from September 1, 2012. As such, Zondo will complete his term as a Constitutional Court justice on August 31, 2024.

Vincent Magwenya, spokesperson for President Ramaphosa, stated that the President has invited leaders of political parties represented in the National Assembly to provide their assessments on Deputy Chief Justice Maya’s suitability for the position of Chief Justice. Maya boasts more than 20 years of experience as a judge, making her a highly qualified candidate for this prestigious role.
