Controversy Surrounding Floyd Shivambu’s Elite Education Choice

They saw it as a betrayal of the EFF's core values and socialism, viewing his decision to study at a perceived elite place of learning in a developed country as contradictory.

On Thursday night, social media was abuzz with the trending hashtag “Congratulations Floyd,” as hundreds of users took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their admiration for Floyd Shivambu.

The Economic Freedom Fighter’s (EFF) Deputy President had just been awarded his MSc in International Development by the University of London.

While many users showered Shivambu with compliments, there was an equal number of individuals who criticised his choice of institution.

Shivambu took to social media to express his gratitude for receiving the prestigious award and to highlight the illustrious alumni he now joins.

He mentioned names such as Walter Rodney, a revolutionary Pan-Africanist from Guyana, and Arkebe Okubay, Africa’s most prominent advocate for industrialisation.

Reflecting on his journey, Shivambu stated, “The journey was worth it and expanded our understanding of what is to be done! And of course, I had to go via Highgate Cemetery to visit Karl Marx’s grave!”

This reference to the famous Russian socialist and father of communism further added to the controversy surrounding his achievement.

Among those who congratulated Shivambu was radio host and co-founder of The Real Network, Gareth Cliff. However, everyday users and EFF supporters also chimed in with their well wishes.

Mervyn Dirk’s simple “Congratulations” while Edzai Zvobwo posted, “Congratulations @floydshivambu! This is wonderful. We have to understand local and international dynamics to best serve our people. Well done, and here’s to many more successes!”

Despite the positive responses, Shivambu faced criticism from others who felt the need to defend his choice of institution.

Unathi Afrika questioned, “Why are some people angry that DP Shivambu studied at this institution?” They argued that understanding both local and international dynamics is essential for effective service to the people.

Shivambu’s decision to pursue his education at the University of London has sparked a debate about the compatibility of elite education with socialist principles. Some argue that gaining knowledge and exposure from prestigious institutions can enhance one’s ability to address societal issues, while others believe it compromises the integrity of socialist ideals.
