Another state of the province address (Sopa) has once again been marred by chaos, as members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) took center stage in disrupting the event. This time, the incident occurred during Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane’s Sopa at the Abbotsford Christian Centre in East London.
Video clips from live news broadcasts captured the moment when EFF members rushed to the podium, angrily gesturing at Premier Mabuyane as he delivered his address. Security personnel intervened, attempting to push them back, but a scuffle ensued. One EFF Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) was seen throwing punches as he was being restrained.

This disruption follows a similar scene that unfolded just days earlier during Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi’s Sopa at the Nasrec expo centre. During that event, a scuffle broke out between EFF MPLs and crime wardens, with water bottles and chairs being thrown. The altercation reportedly stemmed from opposition parties’ objection to the presence of EFF members at the venue.
In addition to the physical altercations, concerns were raised about the presence of what was described as a “paramilitary unit” with firearms, standing in front of members of the legislature. DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga highlighted this issue, further adding to the tension and controversy surrounding the event.
These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges faced in maintaining decorum and order during important political gatherings. The disruption of the Sopa undermines the purpose of the event, which is to provide a platform for the premier to address the state of the province and outline plans for the future.
Efforts should be made to ensure the safety and security of all attendees, while also allowing for peaceful dissent and constructive engagement. It is crucial that political events of this nature are conducted in a manner that upholds the principles of democracy and fosters a respectful environment for all participants.
